Joint development of Samara University and State Budgetary Healthcare Institution (SBHI) Samara Regional Clinical Ophthalmologic Hospital named after TI Eroshevsky

Scholars of Samara National Research University jointly with the specialists of the research institute of eye diseases of Samara Regional Clinical Ophthalmologic Hospital named after TI Eroshevsky (SBHI) has developed a pharmaceutical composition for prevention of proliferative cellular response. This development will allow reducing the number of postoperative complications and will foster the recovery of the diseased after an eye operation.
Surgical interference today is one of the most widespread methods of eyesight recovery. With that the postoperative period includes treatment of an operated eye with certain medicines. Annually around 650000 of such eye operations are made. More than 30000 out of this number are made in Russia.
The problem is that the technologies existing today do not allow absolutely precise calculation of an individual dose of the medical solution, application of it to the operated eye in a certain location without touching of the surrounding tissues. That is why now the post-operation treatment is often done “with plenty to spare” which can lead to overdose of the medicine, appearance of the post-operation complications and increase of rehabilitation period.
Samara University scholars and specialists of SBHI have developed a new medical composition and method of application of this anti-inflammatory medicine to the operated eye. The use of microcrystalline cellulose as a carrier of the medicine is in its basis.
The use of this substance will allow gaining optimal pharmacokinetics, i.e. balanced inflow of the curing substance in a human organism. That is why pharmaceutical composition developed by university scholars and ophthalmologists has a strictly measured local effect in comparison with the usual sponge and medicine. Such measured and local flow of the medicine in the location of the eye allows avoiding toxic influence of the medicine on the joint healthy zones and organism in general.
“Our aim was to develop a necessary concentration of the medicine for saturation of micro-cellulose to keep the local balance between the medicine and ophthalmic liquid in the operated zone”, - Andzhela Bulanova, Professor of Department of Physical Chemistry and Chromatography, head of Research and Education Centre for Nanotechnologies, emphasizes.
New development of Samara University scholars and ophthalmologists in its effectiveness and safety is not worse than world analogues, but it is much more available to patients. Today different medicines for post-operation treatment of the eyes are applied in the world. With that the cost of one packing of a foreign medicine for post-operation treatment of eyes in Russia is averagely more than $350. The home-made medicine with the use of micro-cellulose will cost 6-7 times cheaper.
Currently in Samara Regional Clinical Ophthalmologic Hospital named after TI Eroshevsky clinical trials of the new medicine are being held and scholars of Samara University will continue the investigation of its sorption properties.
