On May 22, 2026, lecturers from the Department of German Philology at Samara University hosted the long-awaited University Olympiad in Area Studies: "Language and Culture of German-Speaking Countries." The event drew 94 participants—students from the Faculty of Philology and Journalism (Social and Humanities Institute) specializing in Foreign Philology and Linguistics, studying German as either their first or second foreign language.

A Challenge of Breadth and Depth

The competition format impressed with its diversity. Participants tackled questions spanning:

    • History, geography, literature, politics, and fine arts of German-speaking nations
    • Map-based tasks focused on Germany
    • Cultural heritage challenges: identifying famous landmarks from photo fragments and recognizing prominent cultural figures from portraits and anniversary dates
    • Slogan decoding and work with idiomatic expressions

Every stage proved demanding—from historical trivia to linguo-cultural analysis—testing not only knowledge but also quick thinking and teamwork.

    Collaboration Across Disciplines

Students demonstrated remarkable erudition and the ability to collaborate in interdisciplinary teams comprising peers from different academic tracks and year levels. The tasks sparked genuine curiosity and generated lively discussion long after the answers were submitted.
