Samara National Research University has significantly improved its position in the QS World University Rankings.
In 2017, Samara University for the first time was included in the World University Rankings by Subject published by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and joined the group of universities that share positions from 800 to 1000.
In one year, Samara University moved to a group of universities occupying positions from 701 to 750.
The higher school of Samara Region has a high scientific and research potential.
In Samara Region there are four universities with special status: Samara National Research University, Samara State Technical University, Togliatti State University, Samara State Medical University. There are four academic institutes and three branches of RAS (Russian Academy of Sciences) institutes in Samara Region. In Samara Governorate there are four academicians and four corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, more than 800 scientists with Doctoral Degree and 3000 scientists with Candidate Degree.
The Head of the Region defined the development of the scientific and educational potential of Samara Region as one of the priorities: "Our universities, academic institutes, technoparks should become the points of the generation of innovation space, the centres of digital transformation of the economy. Give the region and the country specific products, the technologies of the New Information Age." –  set a target the Head of Samara Region, Deputy Chairman of Samara University Supervisory Board Dmitry Azarov.
The promotion of Samara University in the ranking confirms that this task is being solved successfully by the leading university of the region.
"The promotion in QS World University Rankings is very important for us, – said Rector of Samara University Yevgeniy Shakhmatov. – The growth was due to an increase in all criteria that are taken into account by the authors of the study, but the most positive dynamics was recorded by such criteria as "the percentage of foreign students" and "the percentage of foreign teachers”. Students from 70 countries of the world (Europe, Asia, the BRICS and the CIS countries) are now studying at our university."
In 2015, an important event took place in the life of Samara University –  strong scientific and educational schools of two large teams –  Samara State Aerospace University and Samara State University  –   joined together. And now the unified team of the University is working on the result. This unity already gives a visible effect – more and more experts of both Russian and international educational market are getting to know about the university.
"Scientific groups of the university are actively involved in the process of internationalization. All conditions are created at the university: leading foreign scientists are invited to teach in English, more English-language educational programmes in different areas of training are emerging, our scientists actively publish scientific articles in journals indexed in Scopus and Web of Science databases,” – said Yevgeniy Shakhmatov.
Samara  University cooperates with international children's centres, which gather gifted students from near and far abroad countries. Thus, together with ICC "Artek" the university conducts the all-Russian competition with international participation "Sputnik", the finalists of which come to the Crimea and participate in scientific research on the basis of university-created laboratories. Many of those who finished "Sputnik” school, then decide to enter Samara University.
"We are developing new interdisciplinary directions, which give the university great opportunities not only at the national, but also at the international level", – concluded the Rector.
