Regional universities use every opportunity to earn money from their scientific activities and profitably implement their own innovative projects

08.02.2024 2024-03-05
Over last two years, priority areas of university research projects have become developments making it possible to substitute imported technologies and products in the Russian market. Herewith, the system of grants, special orders from industrial partners, and patents for inventions allow monetizing results of research activities.

In the Samara Region, within the framework of competitions for provision of regional prizes and grants in the field of science and technology, projects related to solving applied problems in the interests of socio-economic development of the region receive support.

For example, students and postgraduates of Samara State Medical University conduct research related to treatment of patients. Dmitry Baryshov, the 6th course student at the Institute of Pediatrics of SamSMU, has developed the SlumpINS mobile application for Android. It is designed for patients with diabetes mellitus and allows calculating the required dose of insulin. And the 4th year student of the same university, Sergey Sviridov, together with the team of the Department of Faculty Pediatrics, have been implementing the project on designing innovative algorithms for calculating risk factors for development of cardiovascular diseases in children and adolescents. There are plans to create the mobile application based on these proprietary algorithms.

In 2023, the medical university is said to receive over 50 patents for inventions, utility models and industrial samples, as well as over 110 certificates of state registration of software and databases. “The patented developments relate to priority sectors reflected in the university’s development program: telemedicine, rehabilitation, virtual technologies in education, developing composite endoprostheses, seeking for integrated solutions in applying genetic and laboratory technologies, cell lines and test systems, biomedical cell products for regenerative, personalized medicine and pharmacy. About 1,700 operations were carried out using innovative products of SamSMU, which is almost twice as much as in 2021”, told us at the university.

Tolyatti State University also works in the medical field, cooperating in parallel on three projects with the Medtek company – a supplier of medical devices and equipment for endoprostheses. Within the first project, TSU has developed a surgical ultrasound device for endoprostheses operations. “The device was handed over to the customer at the end of 2023. It is designed to remove polymer cement mixtures during bone prostheses operations. In the domestic market, it will replace imported devices, supplies of which has currently been stopped. I would like to note that components, including disposable nozzles, are not supplied to imported devices in Russia. TSU’s development is 3–5 times cheaper than foreign analogues, but at the same time, its quality is also high”, said Sergey Peteraitis, Vice Rector for Research and Innovation at TSU.

In 2023, Tolyatti State University completed R&D in the total amount of 220 million rubles. Now TSU plans to launch manufacturing finished medical products made of magnesium, on the basis of its own innovation and technology park. The project is carried out jointly with the university’s industrial partner – LLC “Medical Trading Company” (MTK, St. Petersburg). The Institute of Problems of Superplasticity of Metals of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Ufa), OOO "Orenpress" (Orenburg) and RPE “Solar” (Samara) are involved in the work, as well. The total investment in the project is 42 million rubles. In January 2024, MTK received the first registration certificate in Russia for biodegradable magnesium implants for osteosynthesis created by Russian scientists.

In 2023, Samara University gained 1.21 billion rubles for all scientific developments; it is by 385 million more than in 2022. “Due to funding from the state and enterprises, the University is actively engaged in research. Over recent years, the number of patents for inventions and utility models received by the University, as well as certificates for software and databases, has increased. Some are used in scientific research at the University, some are used in further development of more complex technologies and products, and some are brought to the intellectual property market”, we were explained.

Samara State Technical University reported that over the past five years, the university has received more than 350 patents for inventions and utility models, certificates of state registration of software and databases, including 30 in the field of artificial intelligence and unmanned aircraft systems.

Oleg Goryachkin, Vice-Rector for Research at Povolzhskiy State University of Telecommunications and Informatics (PSUTI), said that over recent years, the most notable project of the university in terms of practical significance and prospects for implementation can be considered the work of Professor Anton Burdin. This scientist from Samara has received grants from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the Russian Science Foundation for research in the field of protecting sensitive information for various purposes in data transmission networks.

In 2023, Samara State University of Economics, together with Sopron University (Hungary), implemented the large-scale international grant project “Development of the border regions of Russia and Hungary in conditions of global challenges”.

“Mutual cooperation with Hungarian scientists has allowed gaining irreplaceable experience in developing promising areas for extension of export activities in the Samara Region, building effective trade and economic relations between the region and Kazakhstan. In its development of research activities, the SSEU is focused on research collaboration with leading universities, ones of primarily socio-economic profile, high-tech companies, including IT companies, based on network interaction. Besides, the university has stepped up efforts to involve alternative sources in funding its research work”, told us at SSEU.

Developing partnership

Over recent years, interaction of regional universities and businesses has shifted to the format of partner programs. As a result of joint projects, enterprises test technical solutions created by scientists of educational institutions for real production, and also receive qualified personnel trained to meet their needs.

In 2023, Samara University has implemented 93 scientific projects in the interests of industrial partners. For example, for “UEC – Kuznetsov” PJSC, the University scientists have developed the complex standard technology for the additive manufacturing of parts and assemblies of the hot part of industrial gas turbine engines; and for JSC “Aviakor – Aviation Plant” – technological processes for forming parts from titanium alloys for producing fire barriers of an aircraft.

JSC RCC Progress cooperates with leading educational institutions both in the field of training qualified personnel and in the field of scientific research. Young specialists have the opportunity to work in the units of the enterprise with a time-based production base, which is necessary for ensuring the full cycle of manufacturing rocket and space technology.

“In 2024, educational collaboration of JSC “Tolyattiazot”, TSU and the Federal Centre “Sirius” launched the program “Lessons of real catalysis”. The project participants are pupils of grades 7–11 from various cities of Russia. The schoolchildren will be able to learn online the basics of catalytic processes and the specifics of their application. “The Lessons of the Present” are designed to demonstrate which technologies currently actively develop in Russia, and which companies occupy leading positions”, told us representatives of “Tolyattiazot”.

Banks are looking for talents

Financial institutions operating in the region conclude agreements with educational institutions of the Samara Region, so that from the very first year students could adjust their educational process to modern requirements for industry specialists.

For example, PSB develops collaboration with colleges and universities where students study in the areas of Banking, Finance and Credit, Economics, as well as in various IT specialties. “We not only accept students from the first year of study to practice at our bank, but also employ the best young specialists under the internship program, with the opportunity to continue their studies at the university under the individual curriculum. PSB experts also give lectures, act as experts at scientific conferences, conduct trainings and team-building events, in order to make it possible for young specialists to develop necessary competencies, and identify the best candidates for their further participation in competitive selection in the bank’s client service and IT departments”, explained Vitaly Belotsky, Regional Director of PSB in Samara.

In 2022, Sberbank and the government of the Samara Region signed the agreement on cooperation in the field of IT personnel training. Due to the agreement, “School 21” will be opened in Samara. This is an innovative educational project of Sber, which trains in-demand specialists in the field of information technologies. The software-developing school provides the opportunity for candidates over the age of 18, who have successfully passed the qualifying stages, to receive a sought-after education in the field of IT for free.
