The Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences summed up the results of the 2023 competition of young scientists and students trained according to the educational programs of higher educational establishments and decided to award the RAS medals to 49 young scientists and 35 students. On the whole, 1,483 applicants sent their works to the competition.
The work titled “Axion-like Optical Elements for Formation and Detecting Laser Radiation” by the young scientists of Samara National Research Dmitry Savelyev, Sergey Degtyarev and Pavel Khorin, all of them having a Ph.D. in physics and mathematics, was awarded the medal and prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the General Physics and Astronomy sector.
As Dmitry Savelyev, associate professor at the Department of Technical Cybernetics, said, “The laser beams have various properties. For example, there is the so-called optical trap, an area surrounded by light from all sides. It can be used for manipulations with particles. Our work is directed at the creation of optical elements to manage light, laser radiation. The offered by our academic group special optical elements can be also used to achieve acute focusing of laser radiation – obtaining a very small focal spot. This in its turn can be used for compacted recording of information on discs or other apps. Management of light and its properties is also important as a part of future work in creating an optical computer that is expected to become the next stage of computing technology developing”.
