On December 18, 2024, the Regional Centre for Development of Public Diplomacy and International Relations named after Yevgeniy M. Primakov hosted the Samara International Model of the UN Security Council. The agenda of the meeting was devoted to the Suez crisis.

This year, the Samara UN Model has become international and brought together participants from various countries:

·         Samara National Research University (Russia);

·         Yeltsin Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University (Kyrgyzstan);

·         Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Vietnam (Vietnam);

·         Volgograd State University (Russia);

·         Northwestern Polytechnic University (China);

·         Belgorod State University (Russia);

·         Pakistan Institute of Trade and Development (Pakistan);

·         Bahauddin Zakariya University (Pakistan).

The meeting was opened by Aleksey Chupakhin, Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia in Samara, who welcomed the participants. According to him, despite the fact that the UN system is currently being heavily criticized, this does not allow the UN to be deprived of its status as the main international negotiating platform, where agreements with legal and political implementation can and must be reached. He emphasized, “In July of this year, following Russia’s suggestion, the open debate on the issue of building the more fair and sustainable world order was held in the Security Council. Of course, it is important to continue the discussion both at the UN and at other venues”.

Elena Gulyaeva, Associate Professor at the Department of International Law, the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Candidate of Law Sciences, stressed the need for developing the model movement at the University, for the purpose of improving students’ competencies in international relations, and wished further success to all the participants.

“I am sure that all the participants in this International Model of the UN Security Council will somehow have the opportunity for applying the knowledge, skills and abilities gained during the game in a real working environment, ensure the stability of our countries’ relations between each other, their prosperity and sustainable development”, said Yaroslav Golubinov, Dean of the Faculty of History.

Every year, students and schoolchildren from Russia and other countries take part in the Models of International Organizations of the Primakov Centre. This year, representatives of 9 higher education institutions from all over the world participated in the game. In the business game, the participants became delegates to the UN Security Council, represented the chosen countries’ interests, and came through discussions to adoption of a general resolution.

Following the results of the meeting, according to the Model Presidium, the “Best Delegate” to the UN Security Council, Muhammad Qasim khan from Bahauddin Zakariya University (Pakistan), was awarded.

In course of general voting, the participants selected the “Best Delegation” consisting of students from Samara National Research University: Alina Sadykova, Alina Bakhmetieva.

We thank all the participants of the Samara International Model of the UN Security Council for their active participation in the event and wish them to implement equally interesting creative projects in future!
