Samara National Research University became one of the five universities-winners of the competition of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation for the creation of student design bureaus in the field of "Student technological leadership". Following the results of the competition, the University will receive a subsidy of 20 million rubles for the organization of the engine-building design bureau "DvizhOK".

The student design bureau "DvizhOK" at Samara University will be created on the basis of the Institute of Engine and Power Plant Engineering (IEPPE) using existing equipment and infrastructure. The subject of its developments will include the entire cycle of creating new engines – from designing in digital environments using AI to manufacturing, testing prototype engines and their trial operation, including on unmanned aerial vehicles.

The new team is a fusion of the real practical experience of mature specialists and the enthusiasm of future engineers. More than three dozen students, postgraduates and 6 mentors and curators each from UEC-Kuznetsov and Samara National Research University. DvizhOK Student Design Bureau will be headed by IEPPE Director Vitaly Smelov, while Pavel Chupin, General Designer of UEC-Kuznetsov, assumed scientific leadership. Five departments will appear in the structure of the student Design Bureau: Turbine, Fuel, Gearbox, Additive Manufacturing, and Unmanned Aircraft Systems.

According to Vitaly Smelov, the UAS Department will create an aircraft-type flying laboratory for testing small piston engines in flight conditions. The Fuel Department will launch computational and experimental studies on the use of hydrogen-containing fuel for the combustion chamber of an industrial gas turbine engine of UEC-Kuznetsov PJSC. The Gearbox Department will be tasked with developing a gearbox for small-sized gas turbine engines with a thrust of up to 25 kgf and creating a test bench for a free turbine unit and a gearbox with a capacity of up to 100 hp.

In other words, students of a wide variety of specialties will be able to choose a topic according to their interests at DvizhOK Student Design Bureau – not only future engine designers, but also representatives of other engineering fields, chemists, as well as those who study information technology.
