Scientists from Samara University have prepared recommendations on developing ethical and legal norms for working with artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of education. According to them, the development will help reduce the risks associated with using the tool when training. The results are published in the journal Springer Nature.

Today, according to many researchers, using artificial intelligence opens up new horizons for all participants in the educational process. New technologies make it possible to personalize the learning process and adapt its content and pace to each student’s individual needs and capabilities.

Valentina Mantulenko, Associate Professor of the Department of Pedagogy at Samara National Research University, considers that AI-based technologies are able to take on a number of routine operations, freeing up teachers’ time for creative, research work and developing their professional competencies.

“Artificial intelligence can analyze academic performance, identify knowledge gaps, and offer personalized learning materials. Chatbots and virtual assistants can answer students’ questions, give them instant feedback, and provide round-the-clock access to knowledge. This increases training performance. Besides, artificial intelligence can automate homework-checking, including plagiarism-checking, grading, and other routine tasks. This gives teachers more time for working individually with schoolchildren and students”, she said.

However, according to the expert, it is important to keep in mind the need for the ethical use of artificial intelligence in education. This will help ensure the fairness and transparency of the grade, as well as protect student data.

“The use of artificial intelligence in education involves collecting and analyzing various information about students, including their academic performance, behavioral patterns, personal preferences and interests, socio-economic status, and medical data. Misuse or leakage of this information can have serious consequences for the students, including privacy violations, discrimination, and possible abuse”, said Mantulenko.

Researchers from Samara University have set themselves the task of studying ethical and legal risks that arise when introducing artificial intelligence into education. They paid special attention to the issues of data protection of the main participants in the educational process and ensuring equal access to electronic educational resources. They analyzed the possible threats of violating privacy, related to the collecting, storing and using personal information, as well as probable scenarios of discrimination and inequality when using artificial intelligence.

The scientists have prepared recommendations on developing and introducing ethical and legal norms aimed at minimizing these risks and ensuring responsible use of artificial intelligence in education.

“Our key recommendation is adopting as soon as possible a special federal law that would establish a clear ethical and legal framework for using artificial intelligence in education. The law is needed for developing and introducing codes of ethics for educational institutions, as well as for training all participants in the educational process to use artificial intelligence responsibly and transparently, in order to solve academic and professional problems”, concluded Mantulenko.
