Young Scientists of Samara University Present at the Conference at Lomonosov Moscow State University

Students from Samara University took part in the IV All-Russian Student Conference “Power and Society in the Historical Experience of Humanity” (March 28–29, 2025), held to mark the 270-th anniversary of Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU).

The conference, a prestigious and large-scale academic event, brought together leading young researchers from top universities across Russia. Over two days, participants presented their research projects and attended lectures by MSU faculty on the history of Russian universities and their evolving relationship with state authorities throughout history.

Samara University’s representatives included:

·         Leonid Komin, a 3rd-year Bachelor’s student at the Faculty of History, who presented a report titled “Bargaining with Power: Interaction Between Local Authorities and the Artillery Department in Early 20th-Century Samara”* (supervised by Mikhail M. Leonov, Head of the Department of Russian History and Historiography, Doctor of Historical Sciences).

·         Igor Chernyavsky, a 3rd-year Bachelor’s student, who delivered a report on “Tyranny Behind the Façade of a Kingdom: Agathocles and the Syracusan Tyranny (317–289 BCE)” (supervised by Olga M. Makarova, Associate Professor of the Department of World History, International Relations, and Documentation Studies).

The students shared their reflections on the event. Leonid Komin noted:

“Participating in conferences is invaluable. It allows you to present your research, receive feedback, learn about projects from students at top universities, and build academic connections. I extend my gratitude to the conference organizers, Samara University, and our Department of Russian History and Historiography for making this opportunity possible.”

Igor Chernyavsky emphasized the importance of such events for young scholars:

“Conferences are a crucial step in any academic career. They teach public speaking, provide expert feedback, and help forge professional networks. My experience was highly positive, and I plan to participate in more academic events in the future.”

Both students’ research papers will be published in the conference’s proceedings.
