Seven students specializing in "Foreign Philology (German Language and Literature)" are completing translation practice in the Rare Books Department of Samara University Library. The students are working with German and Latin-language books, atlases, and albums published from the late 18th to early 20th centuries.
Samara University's Rare Book Collection contains publications spanning the most significant scientific and social fields of that era: physics, chemistry, mathematics, astronomy, history, linguistics, and literature. First editions by chemist-inventor Robert Bunsen and mathematician Carl Gauss share shelves with works by Johann Goethe and Friedrich Schiller, Sophocles' plays, and Marcus Tullius Cicero's speeches in Latin. Of particular interest is the "Collection of Spiritual Songs and Poems" published in 1797 in Schweinfurt.
The outcome of the students' practice will be:
1. Bibliographic descriptions of all German and Latin materials in the rare collection
2. Russian-language publication annotations for inclusion in our university library's electronic catalog.
