Students met with representatives of two academic dynasties from the University

In the run-up to Russian Science Day, members of student research societies gathered at the “Tochka Kipeniya” (Boiling Point) innovation hub to meet representatives of two distinguished academic families and reflect on the notion that “Science is a family affair.” The discussion explored how intergenerational dialogue unfolds, and how family values and traditions shape the development of future researchers. Participants examined the intersection of the concepts of “family” and “science” in a dedicated session held at the hub.

Platonov Family: A Dynasty of Chemists

Platonovs are well known at the university for their achievements in both science and education. Nearly all family members have built their academic careers in chemistry, actively conducting research and teaching. The family was represented by its second and third generations: Vladimir Platonov, Head of the Department of Ecology and Life Safety, and his son Vladimir, a second-grade student at the “Alternativa” school and a budding chemist.

The conversation touched upon children’s career choices. “Of course, the idea of continuing a family dynasty is appealing, but ultimately, freedom of choice is more important,” emphasized Vladimir Igorevich. “In our family, children—including myself in my time—decide their own paths, and we respect that decision. That said,” he added with a smile, “if my son chose a different path, I would be disappointed.”

Pavlov Family: When Science Unites

Alexander and Svetlana Pavlov, along with Svetlana’s mother, Lyudmila Odintsova, have all found their calling in the same field—aircraft engineering. All three teach at the Department of Aircraft Design and Construction. Alexander Pavlov, a graduate of Samara University, also serves as Chief Designer at “Aviator” Shipyard LLC.

The story of Alexander and Svetlana’s friendship—and later, their love—began at a scientific conference dedicated to Nobel laureate Zhores Alferov. That meeting proved fateful, uniting the couple through a shared passion for science and technology.

According to the Pavlovs, the family environment plays a crucial role in professional growth and the generation of new ideas. They noted that conversations within the family circle help solve complex problems, inspire novel approaches, and foster innovative projects. Such an atmosphere at home becomes a powerful source of inspiration and confidence in one’s decisions.

What Did Students Take Away from the Meeting?

For many participants, the event was a genuine revelation. Students heard firsthand accounts from individuals whose lives are deeply intertwined with science, technological innovation, and professional accomplishment. Engaging with their own university’s scientists allowed students to better appreciate the importance of familial support, emotional closeness, and respect for each family member’s personal space.

A family does more than create dynasties—it cultivates an environment where the transmission of knowledge and experience occurs naturally and unobtrusively. Support from loved ones strengthens self-belief and removes many barriers on the path to scientific advancement and career development.

“Events like this vividly demonstrate how the inheritance of ancestral experience shapes the identity of a young specialist—someone who can move forward confidently, drawing on the finest qualities of their parents and mentors,” noted Nina Igolkina, Head of the Center for Socio-Psychological Support of Student Families and Director of the University’s Socio-Psychological Center.
