On Tuesday, January 15 the authoritative British edition of Times Higher Education (THE) has announced the results of the THE Emerging Economies University Rankings 2019 spanning 450 universities from 43 countries across four continents. This time Russia was represented by 35 universities.

Samara National Research University has been ranked the 189th  in the overall ranking and moved up to the 15th  position in the Russian part of the list, which is traditionally headed by Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Vladimir Bogatyrev, Vice-Rector for Educational and Foreign Affairs of Samara University, regards it important that now THE experts consider Samara University indicators as these of a unified university. Samara State Aerospace University and Samara State University merged three years ago, but until the end of 2018 the university appeared in international rankings exclusively as an aerospace university. Accordingly, the indicators only of the part of the university were taken into account.

“The results of the recent THE Emerging Economies University Rankings 2019 demonstrate the achievements of our leading engineering schools, as well as fundamental natural sciences directions and an extensive socio-humanitarian block. And although the teams of the “classical” direction took part in the work on international promotion much later than their colleagues from the aerospace block, it is very pleasant that in conditions of rapidly growing competition among Russian universities, the results of the unified Samara University look very decent both in the overall ranking and in the Russian part of it, –  underlines Vladimir Bogatyrev. – It is important for us that the synergy effect from the confluence of the aerospace and classical areas appeared fairly quickly, even by the standards of international university rankings, that work with a significant time lag. And now all the scientific schools of the university, including the schools of the natural sciences and the humanities, are represented at the international level”.

THE methodology is based on 13 performance indicators including Teaching (the learning environment), Research (volume, income and reputation), Citations (research influence), International Outlook (staff, students and research), Industry Income (knowledge transfer).
Samara University showed dynamics in all these indicators, but it showed the largest breakthrough in the number of foreign scientific and pedagogical workers, and the level of scientific publications cited in international databases.
