Samara National Research University team won the silver medal of the WorldSkillsHiTech-2019 Championship in “External Piloting and Operation of Unmanned Aircrafts” competence.
Mikhail Silkin, Dmitry Pavlov and Oleg Chagin demonstrated their skills in this direction. The team was trained by Head of Samara University Center for Unmanned Systems David Ovakimyan.
The VI National Championship of Cross-Industry Working Professions in High-Tech Industries (WorldSkills Hi-Tech) brought together 738 contestants from 53 regions of the country –  these are specialists from 39 largest Russian corporations, holdings and enterprises: Rosatom, Rostec, Sibur, Roscosmos, United Aircraft Corporation, EVRAZ, Chelyabinsk Tube Rolling Plant, Russian Railways.
In "External Piloting and Operation of Unmanned Aircrafts" competence "gold" was taken by Rostec team, "bronze" went to the team from Novosibirsk (Novosibirsk Aircraft Technical College named after B. S. Galushchak). “The team of Samara University is taking part in such competitions for the first time, – says David Ovakimyan. – In fact, we demonstrate our competencies in the field of piloting. It is in this area that we have recently launched a training program for operators of civil unmanned aerial vehicles".
In 2019 the nomination implied team work and invited participants to demonstrate the skills of large aircraft-type drones controlling. Dmitry Pavlov (winner of  WorldSkillsRussia 2016 Championship) and Oleg Chagin (winner of regional competitions) represented the flight crew of Samara University, Mikhail Silkin participated as a compatriot expert.
To demonstrate their professional competencies in the field of drones piloting, the participants completed four tasks. For example, the engineering and navigational calculation assumed the calculation of the flight range, the required fuel, landmarks, elevation maps, etc. As a result they got a complete "working" map. Then the participants demonstrated their flight on a simulator of an unmanned aerial  Loong system vehicle. That is, they launched a starting position, performing terrain monitoring.
In addition, the students piloted Geoscan 201 and Geoscan 401 airplane-type drones, with the help of which they monitored the area with full radio exchange.
The final stage was the processing of data received from the cameras. As a result, the participants presented an orthophotomap with an elevation map and a 3D model of the building.
In 2016, as a first-year student, Dmitry Pavlov became the gold medalist of WorldSkills Russia in the controlling of unmanned aerial vehicles. In the same year, in 2016, the staff of the Center for Unmanned Systems took the initiative to hold a new competence for the regional stage of the WorldSkills Russia championship – “Controlling of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles”. The nomination was organized by Samara University Institute of Aeronautical Engineering.
