In June 2025, a delegation from Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) visited Samara University on a working visit. The delegation included Wang Zhiyou, Deputy Dean of NPU's School of Energy and Power Engineering, and Associate Professor Zheng Guanghua. The purpose of the visit was to discuss scientific and technical cooperation with the Institute of Engines and Power Plants (IEPP) and to participate in the International Scientific and Technical Conference named after N.D. Kuznetsov "Prospects for Engine Development." During the plenary session, Wang Zhiyou presented a report titled "Research on Detonation Combustion Initiation in a Pulse Detonation Engine," which generated interest among conference participants.
Separate discussions regarding the development of Double Degree programs for joint Bachelor's and Master's programs in engine engineering were held with IEPP Director Vitaly Smelov, IEPP Deputy Director Dmitry Uglanov, Head of the Department of Design and Construction of Aircraft Engines Sergey Falaleev, and Professor of the Department of Design and Construction of Aircraft Engines Department Alexander Vinogradov.
The NPU delegation also attended the defense of Bachelor's final qualification theses by students enrolled in the Double Degree program with China's Northwestern Polytechnical University (the "Linyun" group). Members of the State Examination Board and the delegation highly praised the professional knowledge and the quality of the final theses presented by the Linyun group students.
The parties held in-depth discussions on optimizing the Double Degree curriculum and joint scientific projects. It was unanimously decided to leverage the complementary strengths of the universities in engine engineering, create a more efficient, open, and coordinated cooperation mechanism, and elevate Chinese-Russian engineering education to new heights.
Thanks to the close cooperation between the universities, a group of IEPP students enrolled in the "ROSTECH Wings" program will travel to Northwestern Polytechnical University for a two-week summer school in July. The summer school will allow students to deepen their knowledge by learning best practices and studying modern technologies at advanced enterprises in Xi'an on the following topics: theory and design of engines and their components/systems, robotics, artificial intelligence, digital twins in manufacturing, etc.
Thus, the concluded visit has provided fresh impetus for deepening cooperation and joint talent cultivation between the universities of China and Russia.
For Reference:
The Double Degree program with China's Northwestern Polytechnical University enables students to receive diplomas from both universities. Chinese students study for two years (semesters 1-4) at NPU and another two years (semesters 5-8) at Samara University. Students who successfully complete their studies and pass the state final certification receive Bachelor's diplomas from both universities. The program launched in 2019, selecting about 50 Chinese students. They studied their first two years at NPU, mastering not only technical sciences but also intensively studying the Russian language. The 24 best students – the most persistent, hardworking, and talented – continued their studies in Russia. Twelve of them came to Samara National Research University, and the same number went to study at KNRTU-KAI.
Since September 2023, Samara University has annually welcomed a group of Chinese students (12 people) who continue their studies from the 3rd year onward in the IEPP under the joint NPU double degree program.
