Elsevier, one of the largest scientific publishing houses in the world, together with John Ioannidis, a professor at Stanford University, published the updated ranking of the most cited scientists on the planet, among the top 2 % in terms of the number of references to their scientific publications in the Scopus database. The ranking system covers 22 scientific fields, which are divided into 174 specialized areas.

There are two lists in the ranking: one presents the citation figures for 2024 (they were obtained during the 2024 calendar year), the other – for the entire scientific career (they are updated as of the end of 2024).

The ranking includes more than 100,000 scientists from all over the world, with detailed scientometric parameters. Among Russian scientists, there are representatives of Samara National Research University. These are Viktor Soifer, the University’s President, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Nikolay Kazansky, Professor at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics, Viktor Kotlyar, Professor at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics, Leonid Doskolovich, Professor at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics, Aleksey Kovalev, Professor at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics, Dmitry Saveliev, Associate Professor at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics.

The “career-long” ranking includes Viktor Soifer, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Nikolay Kazansky, Professor at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics, Viktor Kotlyar, Professor at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics, Leonid Doskolovich, Professor at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics, Aleksey Kovalev, Professor at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics, Viktor Serezhkin, Professor at the Department of Inorganic Chemistry, Evgeny Bashkirov, Professor at the Department of General and Theoretical Physics.

When compiling the ranking, experts use Scopus data as a basis and consider metrics of scientific activity: the total number of references to the papers, the Hirsch index, as well as special coefficients that take into account the number of co-authors and exclude self-citations.
