On Tuesday, August 30, the results of the seventh Moscow International rating “Three University Missions" were presented. The latest data were announced in the TASS press center by Viktor Sadovnichy, President of the Russian Union of Rectors, Rector of Lomonosov Moscow State University and Dmitry Grishankov, General Director of the Association of Rating Compilers.

In 2023, the number of universities in this study increased to 2,000 (1,800 universities in 2022). The list of the best universities includes 112 countries of the world, including 154 Russian ones. Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) topped the ranking, as in 2022. Oxford, Cambridge and University College London are next. 

Three Russian universities entered the top 100 – Lomonosov Moscow State University (17th place), St. Petersburg State University (39th place) and MFTI (43rd place).

Samara National Research University entered the interval group 1001-1100 of the global ranking and the group 42-48 among Russian universities.

The top 2,000 rating includes educational organizations of all federal districts of Russia from more than half of the subjects of the Russian Federation. Today, the largest number of strong Russian universities is concentrated in Moscow – 39 universities, followed by St. Petersburg (14 universities), Tatarstan (6 universities), Moscow, Tomsk and Tyumen regions (5 universities each). Four universities represent each of the Novosibirsk, Rostov and Samara regions.

"The "Three Missions of the University" rating holds the status of the most representative authoritative academic rating in terms of the number of participants and the number of countries," Viktor Sadovnichy noted. – This year, the list has been expanded to 2,000 positions, and the largest increase in the number of participants was achieved by the BRICS countries, primarily China, India, Russia and Brazil. The ranking also includes all new member countries of this consortium. The BRICS countries in the new configuration already account for 30% of the best universities in the world.”

Among Asian universities, the best indicators were demonstrated by the University of Tokyo (11th place) and Peking University (18th place). The University of Melbourne is recognized as the best university in Australia and Oceania (49th place), in Latin America – the National Autonomous University of Mexico (107th place), in Africa – the University of Cape Town (159th place).

The Moscow International University Ranking evaluates three key missions of the university: education, science and interaction with society. The methodology of the rating was publicly discussed, more than 200 Russian universities took part in the development and improvement of the methodology, and the international expert council included 25 authoritative experts from 16 countries.

Only objective criteria approved by international experts are used to compile the rating, reputation surveys are completely excluded. At the same time, the range of information sources for the rating is much wider than those traditionally used in existing popular ratings.

The main sources of information for the rating include official records of the universities, data from websites of universities and national governments; the largest aggregator platforms for online courses Class Central; the national platform of mass education open education (Russia) and icourse163.org (China); encyclopedia "Wikipedia" the statistics of search engines Google, Yandex, Baidu; statistics social networks; web sites of international competitions of students.

The formation of the Moscow International rating "Three University Missions" was initiated by the Russian Union of Rectors in accordance with the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin. 
The rating operator is the Association of Compilers of Ratings, Rankings and Other Performance Assessments (ACR), whose members are leading rating and research centers.
