The International Astronautical Congress brings together scientists, heads of national space agencies and other space industry specialists from all over the world. In October, in Baku, the 74th Congress was held, bringing together over 3,000 participants from 50 countries.

Samara University traditionally takes part in this major scientific event, and has been an associate member of the International Astronautical Federation since 2013. This year, the University was represented at the Congress by Olga Starinova, Head of the Department of Flight Dynamics and Control Systems, and the delegation from the Inter-University Department of Space Research – Igor Belokonov, Head of the Department, master-degree students Angelo Espinosa, Okhana Berger, Alfredo Aguilera and Damian Guerra from the Department of Aircraft Construction and Design.

Professor Olga Starinova presented to the scientific community the software program for controlling the multi-type electric propulsion system for the Earth-Mars-Earth-Jupiter space mission.

Angelo Espinosa made in the Section “Social and economic applications of the Earth remote sensing” the presentation “Proposal of the integrated remote sensing system for detecting illegal activities in Latin America”.

Okhana Berger spoke at the Symposium on small satellite missions, presenting her report “The CubeSat educational nanosatellite project for testing SamSat-LED optical communication”.

Alfredo Aguilera presented at the Symposium on space exploration the solar tracking system designed for spacecrafts. The master-degree student met with the head of the Mexican Space Agency, for discussing implementation of his project. At the Congress, Alfredo also presented the study on developing the neural network for solving design and structural problems. He performed this work in collaboration with Constantino Atzin.

In the Section “Scientific space missions”, the Head of the Department, Igor Belokonov presented the nanosatellite SamSat-ION developed at Samara University, one of scientific missions of which is exploring geophysical fields. Let us recall that the satellite was launched into space on June 27 as part of the launch of the Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle in framework of the UniverSat-2023 ICA cluster.

The reports of the Department’s master-degree students were noted by experts. So, Angelo Espinosa’s presentation was recognized as the best one in his Section. And Okhana Berger’s presentation was included in the list of 68 best of 500 presented.

During the Congress, the master-degree students of the Inter-University Department of Space Research met Yury Borisov, CEO of the Roscosmos State Corporation. They told him about their projects at the University, to which the CEO of Roscosmos replied, “You have chosen a very good institute!”

“We know how important cooperation in the space sector is, and that’s why we are happy to see our Department represented internationally. We are looking forward to the International Astronautical Congress 2024!”, shared Angelo Espinosa his impressions.
