The Publishing House of the Russian Academy of Sciences has published the collective monograph “Terahertz Photonics”.  It is dedicated to photonics of the terahertz frequency range, one of the most intriguing objects of modern electromagnetic radiation physics.  The co-authors of one of the chapters of the book are the personnel of Samara University’s Departments of Nanoengineering and Technical Cybernetics.

The publication presents results of the authors’ research in several relevant scientific areas.  It is conditionally divided into two sections: one section includes chapters on generating terahertz radiation in gas and plasma media, generating terahertz radiation by atomic systems in multi-frequency laser fields, optics of unipolar and quasi-unipolar terahertz and optical pulses. The other section includes works on discussing terahertz spin photonics and magnonics, non-linear optics of terahertz radiation and high-resolution terahertz spectroscopy.

Many sections of the monograph are based on research supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, Programs of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Science Foundation.

The chapter, which is co-authored by the personnel of Samara University’s Departments of Nanoengineering and Technical Cybernetics, is called “Holography and Diffraction Optics in the Terahertz Range” (authors - V.A.  Soyfer, V.S. Paveliev, V.V. Gerasimov, K.N. Tukmakov, M.S. Komlenok, S.N.  Khonina, S.A.  Degtyarev, A.N.  Agafonov, V.I.  Konov, N.D. Osintseva, Yu.Yu.  Choporova).  This chapter is dedicated to results achieved in developing and researching elements of diffraction micro-optics (including power one) in the terahertz range and obtained by Samara scientists together with their colleagues from the G.I. Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Novosibirsk) and the Institute of General Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow).

“Currently, there is a strong trend in developing terahertz technologies, which was initially caused by successes in optoelectronics and non-linear optics”, explained Vladimir Paveliev, Head of the Department of Nanoengineering, one of the authors of the monograph. “Created at Samara University, these elements make it possible to control beams of powerful terahertz radiation at the unique installation - the Novosibirsk Free Electron Laser (NFEL).  This opens up the opportunity for obtaining new results in such fields as materials science, terahertz plasmonics, telecommunications, and fundamental research”.

“Terahertz photonics has developed into a very active research community, and we hope that this book will become a source of help for new researchers, as well as a reference book for more experienced members of the community”, note the authors of the monograph.
