The two-day All-Russian Scientific and Technical Forum on Engines and Power Plants named after N.D. Kuznetsov has become the center of discussions on topical issues of industry development. It is held every two years and has already become traditional. The events took place on October 10-11 at two venues: Samara National Research University and PJSC UEC-Kuznetsov, which jointly organized the forum.
According to the organizers, this year more than 100 representatives of engine-building enterprises, research and educational organizations, IT companies and related industries, who gathered in Samara from all over Russia, made presentations at discussion platforms. More than 600 specialists, postgraduates and students took part in the discussions.
C-Kuznetsov" Alexey Sobolev described the N.D. Kuznetsov Forum as a platform where solutions to the most pressing problems facing the engine industry are being sought.
"The All-Russian Scientific and Technical Forum is a special format for discussing topical issues of the engine industry, which we came to in 2022. The agenda and topics of the discussion platforms are determined by the challenges of today – a fundamental increase in production volumes, the need to introduce a fundamentally new personnel training system, increased engine reliability due to increased workload in operation, an increased volume of orders from the fuel and energy complex, import substitution of software for engineering calculations and production management. Under these conditions, UEC-Kuznetsov designs high-power engines for the gas pumping industry, ultralight rockets and small gas turbine engines. I hope that within the framework of the forum we will be able to work out new solutions and form a vector of interaction for the coming years," Alexey Sobolev said.
The vector of the discussion at the plenary session was set by Dmitry Karelin, Deputy General Designer for Research and Development of the United Engine Corporation (UEC, part of Rostec State Corporation). He spoke about new areas in which the UEC plans to expand its involvement. Among them are the creation of piston aircraft engines, small–sized gas turbine engines, power plants based on fuel cells and hybrid power plants.
Dmitry Karelin presented a comprehensive program for the development of engine building until 2035 and outlined new requirements for aviation gas turbine engines, which designers take into account when creating power plants. In addition, Dmitry Karelin spoke about the evolution of the introduction of new structural materials in the aircraft engine industry after 2040, including polymer and thermal composites, metal composite materials.
"The development strategy of the UEC involves the development of 16 critical technologies. UEC designers are creating technology demonstrator engines that show the vector of development of gas turbine aircraft engines. Their implementation will make it possible to develop a new generation of power plants," Dmitry Karelin said.
Pavel Chupin, General Designer of PJSC UEC-Kuznetsov, presented promising areas of the company's work, including the development of the PD-8V helicopter engine, the development of a line of ground-based gas turbine units in the direction of increasing power, the creation of liquid rocket engines for ultralight launch vehicles, and a number of others.
Pavel Chupin spoke about the transition to domestic software, about cooperation with its developers, which allows for rapid improvement of software complexes. He elaborated on the training of engineering personnel under the Rostec Wings program, as well as at the Advanced Aerospace Engineering School of Samara University with the involvement of students in research work carried out at the university in the interests of "UEC-Kuznetsov".
"The most important thing is that we implement the principle of learning through project activities. This fusion of educational activities and real projects ensures the effective development of both the enterprise and the University," Pavel Chupin stressed.
Deputy General Director – Director of the Research Center "Dynamics, Strength, Reliability" of the Central Institute of Aviation Engine Engineering (CIAEE) Yuri Nozhnitsky analyzed the world experience in organizing studies and R&D in the development of gas turbine engines (GTE) of the 4th and 5th generations, and then focused on the most pressing issues of ensuring the strength and reliability of aircraft engines.
In particular, he spoke about the tightening of requirements for aircraft engines, the emergence of new requirements, for example, to ensure their performance in a cloud of volcanic dust, new probabilistic approaches to monitoring and searching for defects in engines and evaluating their performance, as well as the evolution of computational methods to confirm the strength reliability of GTE.
The report of Dmitry Markovich, Deputy Chairman of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was devoted to fundamental and applied research on engine building conducted by Siberian academic institutes. Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Markovich shared his experience in studying the processes of fuel atomization and combustion, optimizing compressor stages, as well as studying non-stationary vortex structures.
After the plenary session, the work of the forum continued in 11 expert design sessions dedicated to the most relevant areas of engine building. These are new structural materials and technologies, in particular additive ones; these are issues of strength and reliability of aircraft engines, environmentally friendly fuels, as well as modern methods of designing gas turbine engines, including using digital twin technology. These are power plants for drones, liquid engines for ultralight launch vehicles and spacecraft.
The focus is put on digitalization. The forum participants discussed the transition to domestic software, models and competencies of a digital enterprise. New approaches to engineering education in Advanced Engineering Schools have not been ignored either.
And two more eventful days included a seminar "Rostec Wings", a TIPS session, a congress of young scientists "Com on, youth!", a student hackathon "Digital Production" and a student design marathon, "Night at the Engine Museum: When Engines Come to Life" at the University Center for the History of Aircraft Engines, as well as an excursion to the company "UEC-Kuznetsov".
On the closing day of the forum, Director of Institute of Engine and Power Plant Engineering Vitaly Smelov and General Designer of PJSC UEC-Kuznetsov Pavel Chupin presented awards to the teams of students of Samara University, who won the design marathon and the hackathon "Digital Production".
