Exhibition “Development of Rocket Science in Russia” devoted to the life and activities of the outstanding designer Sergey Pavlovich Korolev opened in Samara National Research University, which is named after the scientist. Photos and documents unknown to the wide audience are presented at the exposition including TASS materials on historical events of 1960s.
“In order to promote science, industry, space now, it is necessary to understand from where everything began. It is important to see historical aspects of this activity, archive documents”, – Director of RAS Archive Aleksander Rabotkevich said at the opening of exposition.
Exposition was made of 50 exhibits from the foundation of Sergey Korolev and RAS archive – copies of documents, manuscripts, drawings, photos. Mainly these are evidences that were not widely replicated earlier. The exposition opens with photos of Korolev as a child and excerpts from his biography, his academic documents are presented. The exhibition tells about the period of 1930s when the young scientist began his path, reflects the main stages of his work in further decades, 1960s and the first space flights, and then familiarizes with modern everyday life of RSC “Progress”.
Publications with personal corrections
Among the exhibits there is a report of TASS observer Aleksander Romanov “Vostok-2” has started” on the flight of German Titov and a fragment of conversation of journalist with the scientist that was named “More high and far than stars above”. In the margin there are corrections and additions made by hand of Korolev. With consent of the scientist the materials were published in 1961 and 1965. Near there is a text of “space lyrical song “Man overboard” written by Romanov on the tune of the hit “We are neither stokers, nor carpenters”. In 1965, Korolev also made personal corrections to these lines.
“Sergey Pavlovich deeply understood not only the essence of his work, but also how to say people about it, this is the creative nature of his personality”, – Rabotkevich supposes. Deputy Director of RAS Archive, author of the exposition Olga Selivanova added that the scientist “understood well the importance of what now could be called formation of public opinion, his correction of published works was necessary”.
The exhibition is opened to visitors till 28 November. It is organized by Samara University, Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences, “Progress” RSC JSC, PJSC “ODK-Kuznetsov”, Regional Center for Development of Public Diplomacy and International Relations named after Evgeny M. Primakov.
Sergey Pavlovich Korolev (1907–1966) – Soviet engineering designer, USSR AS Academician, twice given the title of Hero of Socialist Labor, founder of Russian astronautics. Under his leadership the first Soviet rockets were launched and spacecrafts were designed. More than 250 scientific papers, articles and inventions belong to the authorship of the scientist.
